MMA Glove Sizing Guide: Measure and Check the Fit

MMA glove charts may use hand width or circumference. Learn how to measure for a named model and check fit with your training wrap setup.

Quick answer

Measure your hand the way the glove maker's chart specifies, then use that chart for the exact model. Fairtex's size guide uses knuckle width, while Hayabusa's MMA guide uses hand circumference below the knuckles. These measurements are different, so do not convert a size from one brand to another.

Start with the specific glove’s size chart, since makers can measure the hand differently. A knuckle-width measurement and a hand-circumference measurement cannot be compared as if they were the same number.

Use the measurement method in the chart

Manufacturer example Measurement method What to do
Fairtex grappling gloves Measure straight across the knuckles, excluding the thumb Match the width to Fairtex’s MMA glove table
Hayabusa MMA gloves Measure around the widest part of the palm below the knuckles, excluding the thumb Match the circumference to Hayabusa’s sizing guide

These are examples of two brand methods, not a universal MMA glove standard. Keep the measurement in the same unit and format shown by the maker.

Account for your wraps

If your class uses hand wraps under MMA gloves, follow the glove maker’s instruction for that model. Hayabusa advises accounting for the extra padding from wraps when sizing. Try the glove with the wrap setup you expect to use, and check its fit around the palm, knuckles, wrist and finger openings.

If your gym has a required glove for sparring or a particular drill, follow that rule before choosing a model. Our MMA glove types guide explains competition, sparring and bag glove formats; the boxing hand wraps guide covers wrap lengths and types. Browse MMA and Muay Thai gear.

Fit checks to make

Area Buyer check
Palm The glove sits in the maker’s intended position
Knuckles Padding aligns with the hand as shown for the model
Wrist closure The closure secures without excess material folding over
Fingers and thumb Open-finger construction leaves the movement the model is designed for
Wrapped fit The exact wrap setup fits without forcing the glove closed

Common questions

How do I measure for MMA gloves?

Check the maker's chart first. Fairtex asks for knuckle width across the hand, while Hayabusa asks for circumference around the palm below the knuckles, excluding the thumb.

Are MMA glove sizes the same between brands?

Sizing and measurement methods vary by maker. Use the chart for the exact brand and model you are considering.

Should I measure with hand wraps on?

Follow the maker's instructions and account for the wraps you use in that class. Hayabusa's guide says to allow for the added padding when sizing its glove.

How tight should an MMA glove feel?

Hayabusa describes a snug fit that does not feel restrictive. Check the named model's guidance and try it with your normal wrap setup.
